Rapid Response and Research Intern

Position summary

The Booker for the Commonwealth campaign is currently seeking a Rapid Response and Research Intern to help elect Kentucky Democratic nominee Charles Booker to the U.S. Senate. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, a strong researcher and writer, interested in Kentucky politics and political communications, and excited to work in a fast-paced environment where news can change by the hour.

The intern will work under the campaign's Deputy Director of Rapid Response and Research, as well as the comms team, on a range of day-to-day research, monitoring, and rapid response operations.

Responsibilities

• Conducting rapid research on Charles Booker, Andy Barr, Kentucky politics, policy issues, breaking news, and relevant political figures.
• Monitoring daily news, social media, public statements, interviews, speeches, and political developments for potential rapid response opportunities.
• Identifying and researching attacks, claims, statements, votes, records, and controversies involving Andy Barr and other political opponents.
• Finding, verifying, and compiling primary sources, including news articles, public records, congressional votes, government documents, campaign finance records, transcripts, and archived materials.
• Drafting research memos, rapid response briefs, talking points, fact sheets, and background materials for the communications and campaign teams.
• Supporting rapid response efforts by quickly developing factual, well-sourced responses to breaking news and attacks against Charles Booker.
• Maintaining organized research files and databases of relevant quotes, votes, statements, articles, opposition research, and other campaign information.
• Tracking developing political stories and identifying emerging narratives that could affect the campaign.
• Fact-checking campaign materials and public claims to ensure that communications are accurate, defensible, and supported by reliable sources.
• Assisting with opposition research projects and longer-term research assignments as needed.
• Working closely with the communications team to translate research findings into clear and compelling messaging.
• Taking on additional research and rapid response projects as needed, often on short deadlines.

Schedule and location

This is an unpaid internship opportunity. The campaign can work with students and their schools to provide college credit where applicable, subject to the requirements of the student's institution.

The position requires at least 15 hours per week, with scheduling flexibility to accommodate classes and other extracurricular commitments. Because rapid response work can be time-sensitive, some flexibility during major breaking news events is strongly preferred. Proximity to Louisville is preferred, but not required.
